Introducing Troye Sivan: The Music You Need

By Alexis Sanchez on January 30, 2016

Okay, so I am a huge music lover and I know I’m always on the lookout for new artists to listen to after I’ve exhaustedly listened to one artist hundreds of times. I’m sure there are plenty of people like me (at least I hope so) that would like to explore new artists and new music so I will tell you all about Troye Sivan, an artist that you should listen to because I have grown to love him since his first single.

However, before Troye Sivan was on the music scene, he started out on Youtube which led to his small role in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the very popular film series in South Africa, Spud. But, I am so glad he stepped into the music scene to not only show off his vocals but his unique music style.

Troye Sivan is actually not a new artist to me because his first single was released two years ago, Happy Little Pill, and quickly put him into view of the music community with Billboard debuting the music video for the song. The song immediately introduced his sound of rhythmic electronics and his surprisingly soulful voice. I remember first listening to this song and being struck speechless by the deepness of his voice and his lyrics and how they flowed together so well with the downtempo of the instrumentals. This is the perfect ‘I need to escape for a little bit’ kind of song.

He quickly released an EP titled TRXYE which composed of 5 songs including Happy Little Pill and just made me fall in love with his music. Safe to say I was hooked on his looming yet enticing pop sound with meaningful lyrics like his opening lines from his song Gasoline, “I smell heartbreak on my hands, I feel sick to my stomach as I begin to stand”. The lyrics are very intimate and personal and you can already feel the heartbreak even if your heart has never been broken before!

Then, he released the single off of his first album Blue Neighbourhood titled WildOnce I heard the cheerful “wild” sang in the background with Troye’s longing clearly evoked in the lyrics, I was angry at him for not just releasing the album because it was too good.

Instead, he released a trilogy of videos one at a time which was a great opener for the theme of his album: love and the feeling of not belonging. He specifically speaks for the LGBT community by talking about his relationships being a gay man and not hiding the internal and external struggles he dealt with before he openly came out. Those themes are very relatable and honest, which leaves his audience with someone who is speaking to them and going through the journey of finding yourself (even if you are not apart of the LGBT community, you can still connect to the emotions and the general themes of his music, but it’s always great to have representation for those who need it).

And Blue Neighbourhood is now available in stores and on multiple streaming sites, so check him out! He even recently performed live on The Tonight Show and The Ellen Show, which means he’s just starting on his journey to great success.
