Let’s face it guys, getting your first apartment is a big deal. Whether you are paying for it completely on your own or getting help from your parents, having a place of your own is one of the first ways to officially categorize yourself as an adult. After all, whether you moved out of your parents’ house or moved out of a dorm, having an apartment is a completely different ballgame.

Living on your own is a beautiful and eye-opening time that comes with great freedom and great responsibility. If you have just moved into an apartment, I’m sure you will relate to my top four apartment firsts below!

1. Hosting your first party

One of the biggest priorities, if not your biggest priority after settling into your new apartment, is hosting your first party. Whether or not you are a social butterfly with a million friends or more on the shy side with a handful of close pals, hosting a party for the first time is a big deal!

You want to make sure that not only is your place is spotless (see milestone #2) but also there is plenty of good food to eat (and good alcohol if you’re of age)! Also, when evaluating food, whatever quantity you may think is good enough, double it, because there are always those couple people that mistake your lovely spread of food as a lunch buffet. After all, there is nothing that makes a college kid happier than getting free food.

Lastly, having a great playlist that keeps the positive vibes of the party going is essential to keep guests wanting to come back again and again! I feel exhausted after typing all this and I did not even host a party! When it comes to first apartment milestones, hosting a party is definitely #1 on my list; have you seen all of the effort that goes into one? The cleanup is another story …

2. Cleaning your apartment for the first time

The aftermath of a night of intense partying can sometimes look like a nightmare on earth. Upon opening your eyes, you may disturbingly find food and drinks everywhere, your new couch pillows floating around the place, toilet paper in places you didn’t knew existed, and the list goes on and on.

When it comes to cleaning up after a party, or cleaning your apartment for the first time in general, you definitely have your work cut out for you. In either case, you’ll be doing some heavy duty scrubbing, steam cleaning, vacuuming, mopping, bleaching, etc. Hopefully you have nice friends or a roommate that can help with this, but if not, congratulations for doing a two-man job!

Regardless if you are used to doing extensive cleaning or not, tackling your apartment cleaning on your own is a huge milestone.

3. Sleeping alone for the first time

Whether you were used to sharing a dorm with roommates or being at home with your family, sleeping alone was probably never a thought that went through your mind. However, sleeping alone in your apartment for the first time is a huge milestone. If you’re not used to it, sleeping alone can be not only lonely but also kind of scary!

I remember nights that I slept alone in my apartment scaring me initially, as I was super sensitive to every small creak and breeze that would make noise. However, after the first few nights you sleep by yourself, you become much more comfortable in your own space! And do not worry, you are not crazy for checking the lock to your door, again. You would much rather be safe than sorry!

4. Leaving your apartment for vacation for the first time

Before you can blink an eye, fall break has come and now it is your time to pig out on Thanksgiving with your family. Spending time with your family for the holidays means leaving your apartment for a lengthy period of time, which can cause some stress and anxiety!

You have to think about the safety of all of your possessions and be trusting of the fact that your roommate will not host any crazy holiday parties while you are gone! Regardless, just make sure your straightener is unplugged, your stove is turned off, and your heat temperature is to a minimum.

Living in an apartment for the first time takes a great deal of responsibility, but you also get to learn a lot about yourself along the way. Though they may seem silly now, you will look back at these “firsts” and remember how well you did on your own for the first time and the great memories that came from them.
